1. Что это такое?

Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop - это основанная на открытом коде (Open Source) программа, предоставляющая виртуальный рабочий стол уровня предприятия. Данное решение позволяет IT-отделам предоставить "Рабочий стол" и приложения (изначально Linux-приложения, но вскоре и Windows-приложения) пользователям, независимо от их расположения.

Наша философия - позволить IT-отделам создавать централизованно управляемые рабочие столы пользователей с помощью "пары щелчков мыши", комбинируя приложения из разных сред (сначала Linux, позже Windows, Unix и AJAX). Таким образом организации, создав наиболее лёгкую и дешёвую инфраструктуру, смогут перераспределить прежние затраты.

2. Для кого это?

3. Open Virtual Desktop?

4. Open Source

Professional support: for enterprise level usage, a dual licensing model offers different levels of support, extended update services, and when needed, IP indemnification clauses and enterprise class features.

Additionally, Ulteo will provide an open product definition process so that IT departments can influence the development roadmap, enabling Ulteo to build exactly what customers need.

In some cases where specific features are requested by customers, Ulteo will prioritize key developments and where possible will fund them. In other cases customers may co-fund development with Ulteo, or the community may be asked to contribute to these new requirements.

From the open source community, we will encourage various contributions, from internationalization, testing, benchmarking, best practice, features, viral marketing and anything that can improve the solution for the benefit of all users.

E. How long does it take to install Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop and what skills are required?

In just a few minutes, the Ulteo Proof of Concept system can be up and running enabling organizations to move quickly to a real production system. We believe in simplicity and productivity, so the solution has been designed to be easy to use and time-effective. Setting up the solution requires a standard IT system administrator skillset. Ulteo offers a full set of a documentation, which walks IT administrators through how to download and install the system in several easy steps.

F. What are the technical requirements to try and use Ulteo?

• Clients: No client installation is required to a device such as a PC or laptop - only a modern web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer v6-7 or Mozilla Firefox 2-3 (with Javascript enabled and Java Runtime Environment 1.5-1.6) is needed.
• Servers: At least two PCs installed with Ubuntu 8.04.1/x86-32 Server; one for the Session Manager, one or more for the Application Servers. Note: Installation guides for RHEL 5 and Fedora 9, as well as for Linux servers, are also available.
• For the full production system, dual-core CPUs or better are recommended for the Application Servers.
• Depending on the number and the kind of applications used, up to 20 users can run simultaneously on 1 GB or RAM.
• LAN: At least 10Mbps, and ideally 100Mbps or faster LAN depending on number of users on the network.
• Integration: the system can be plugged to an existing Active Directory or LDAP directory, and supports both CIFS and NFS fileservers.

G. Who is behind Ulteo?

Ulteo was founded by veteran entrepreneurs Gaël Duval (founder of Mandrake Linux, a popular Linux distribution) and Thierry Koehrlen (co-founder of www.intalio.com, the leading Open Source BPMS). Thierry and Gaël are joined by Vincent Branger as Product Marketing Director. He brings wealth of experience of both the Linux/Unix world and the commercialization of virtualization solutions (Citrix, VMWare, Windows, Sun, etc.).
